Recording HUD
The floating bar shows level, partial transcript, polish fixes, and hands-free mode.
Before you start
- At least one successful dictation.
Steps

Start dictation — the HUD appears near the menu bar (Mac), tray (Windows), or as a bubble on mobile.

Mac: open Settings (⌘,) → Microphone HUD to pick a screen anchor (bottom center, corners, top) or drag the mic on screen.

Use Show on screen, arrow nudge (16 pt), or Reset position in Settings when the HUD is hard to find.

While recording, partial text streams in real time over the WebSocket.

If cloud polish fixes a word, a small toast shows what changed — tap to undo the fix.

Hands-free: double-tap the hotkey (desktop) or toggle hands-free on the HUD — tap again to finish.

Cancel: press Esc (desktop) or tap X on the HUD without releasing audio — nothing is inserted.

Mac: choose HUD Simple or Power in Settings → Microphone HUD — Simple is click-to-dictate; right-click opens the quick menu.

Mac: right-click the floating mic → Mode to switch Literal / Clean / Email / Chat / Code (maps to Polish mode + auto-polish).
Common mistakes
- Mac: drag the mic orb to a custom spot — preset switches to Custom and the position is saved per display.
- Windows: drag the floating HUD bar; position is saved in %APPDATA%\FlyType\config.json.
- Long recordings (>2 min) may split polish batches; text still arrives in order.
- Mac Interaction Convenience: Settings → Microphone HUD → Simple (default) click start/stop; Power keeps hover and click options. Shell dictation chip hides with a short debounce to avoid flicker.
- Mac VO-E soft: right-click the HUD mic → Mode (Literal / Clean / Email / Chat / Code) — same prefs as Settings → Style Polish mode; Shell Simple/Power is separate.
